Acupuncture
What is Acupuncture?
Acupuncture is an ancient system of healing that developed in the Far East thousands of years ago and uses very fine needles at specific points on the body to stimulate healing. Acupuncture is a safe and effective form of treatment that is increasingly popular and there is a growing body of scientific evidence demonstrating its effectiveness in treating a whole range of health problems.
Different types of Acupuncture
Traditional Chinese acupuncture is tailored to suit your individual needs. It is a holistic treatment, which means we are interested in you as a whole person not just your symptoms. For instance, I would take into account your environment (both social and physical), your work, your personal and medical history and your lifestyle. Acupuncture can also work with your emotions and spirit, as well as a huge range of physical problems.
What happens at my first appointment?
At your first appointment you will have a consultation which will form part of your Traditional Chinese Medical diagnosis.
One of the most important diagnostic methods used by TCM practioners is the observation of the patients tongue. The tongue is considered the “Map” of the body since its shape and condition correspond to the wellness of meridians and organs.
The other is the taking of the pulse. When we think about taking the pulse, we usually think of how quickly, slowly or evenly the heart is beating. Traditional Chinese Medicine, however, reads the pulse at three varying depths and at three different wrist locations. These pulse points relate to a different organ system and gives an insight as to what is going on energetically within you. Depending on the diagnosis, other methods of treatment may be used in conjunction with the acupuncture.
